Motherhood Photography South Wales - Family Photography Abergavenny - Keepers Pond

Sarah Louise Haile

Welcome to the first in a series of blogs where I will be sharing my favourite South Wales locations for your photoshoot. As this is the first blog I thought we’d start big emphasis on the word ‘big’. Big because of it’s a truly breathing taking views, big because it’s the perfect setting for truly epic photos and big because it is literally a mountain! We’re talking about Keepers Pond and the Blorange!

I’ve had the pleasure of using this location for many photoshoots of all different kinds. From maternity to big family gatherings right through to branding photoshoots for small business owners.

For my clients who do choose this setting I always suggest we shoot during ‘golden hour’ (this is the hour before sunset). The light is beautiful up there then, soft, warm and glowing which makes for dreamy images. Plus it means you get to enjoying watching the sun set from a perspective like no other! This location isn’t the right choice for clients who would like to shoot at another time of day. As this is such an open space with no trees or anything else to create shadows it means when the sun is at it’s highest it will cast harsh shadows across you, not the best look! Some of my favourite features about this location include,

  • Incredible views over Abergavenny

  • Lots of warm green tones from the rolling hills, fields and plant life

  • Huge pond to bring an element of calm or for kids to enjoy paddling/throwing stones

  • If we’re very lucky we get the occasional visit from very tame wild horses!

Now technically I’ve mentioned two location in this post, Keepers Pond AND the Blorange. Keepers Pond is on the Blorange, and as much as I love shooting here the fact is, it’s a popular spot which gets pretty busy. So I mention the Blorange separately because if you want the views without the crowds then we can either hike a little way from the pond itself or we can drive a few meters up the road to the quieter Foxhunters. This spot has all of the beautiful points I mentioned before (minus the pond) but it does offer much more privacy. I have been able to hold hour long photoshoots here without any disturbances. Of course we do have the option of using BOTH Keepers Pond and Foxhunters in the same session so that you can get the best of both worlds!

Things to consider about this location are mostly in regard to your styling choices. It is after all the top of a mountain, this means its colder and very windy. So long flowing dresses could be problematic unless you’re happy to go with the windswept look! I always recommend clients bring extra layers, maybe even cosy blankets that fit their clothing colours when shooting up here. And it’s not a bad idea to bring some hot drinks in flasks for afterwards!
